What is Outwild?

Outwild is a non-profit initiative founded in 2011 (registered under the name La Rando at the Strasbourg district court, volume 90 – folio 2), born from a shared passion for mountains, trekking, and adventure travel. Through our community, we share advice, field reports, and resources to help enthusiasts discover the world of expedition travel.

During the COVID-19 period, a solidarity initiative under the name Outwild was launched to support several guides, sherpas, and local trekking professionals affected by the sudden halt in tourism. This effort helped build strong human connections with local guides in Nepal and other regions around the world.

“Sharing expedition culture, fostering human exchange, and supporting local mountain communities.”

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How does Outwild work?

Outwild connects you directly with verified independent local guides to organize your tailor-made trek or expedition, without traditional travel agency intermediaries.

Is Outwild a traditional travel agency?

No — Outwild is a free platform that directly connects travelers with fully independent local guides via WhatsApp, without intermediaries, for a more authentic and more affordable experience. The platform was created during the COVID period to help Nepalese Sherpas.

What destinations does Outwild offer?

Himalayas, Nepal, Morocco, the Alps, deserts… destinations cover some of the world’s most iconic mountain ranges and environments.

Do you need to be an experienced mountaineer to go with Outwild?

No, local agencies offer treks for all levels, from first high-altitude experiences to more committed expeditions.

Can you organize a trek in Nepal without experience?

Yes, local guides support both beginners and experienced trekkers, with programs adapted to your level.

Trekking & Travel

How do you contact a local guide through Outwild?

You submit your project, Outwild suggests guides matching your criteria, and you communicate directly with them via WhatsApp.

Are Outwild guides certified?

Yes, all guides are verified before joining the platform.

What are the prices for a trek with Outwild?

Prices vary depending on the destination and duration — the direct model generally allows for more competitive rates than a traditional agency. You can discuss pricing directly with the guide. Outwild does not set prices and does not sell anything!

Visas & formalities

How to obtain a Nepal visa on arrival? The visa is obtained at Kathmandu airport or at land border crossings. Bring a passport photo, a passport valid for at least 6 months, and cash for payment: $30 for 15 days, $50 for 30 days, $125 for 90 days. On-site online kiosks speed up the process.

What are the different types of visa on arrival? There are three durations: 15 days ($30), 30 days ($50), and 90 days ($125). The tourist visa is sufficient for most treks. High-altitude expeditions require additional permits.

Do I need a permit to trek in Nepal? Yes. Most treks require a TIMS permit and a protected area permit (ACAP for Annapurna, SNPPA for Everest). Your Outwild guide handles these procedures for you.

Preparing your trek

When is the best time to go trekking in Nepal? Autumn (October–November) and spring (March–May) are the two ideal seasons. Winter is still possible at lower altitudes. The monsoon season (June–August) is not recommended for high routes.

Is trekking in Nepal difficult? There are routes for all levels. The main challenges are altitude, daily distance, and elevation gain. Your Outwild guide adjusts the pace to your physical condition.

How long should you plan for a trek in Nepal? Allow 12 to 16 days for Everest Base Camp, and 14 to 21 days for the Annapurna Circuit. Outwild customizes each itinerary based on your availability.
